Not necessarily the “best” of the era, but these always take me back to that time and place. I still enjoy them all.
5. The Allman Brothers, Eat a Peach
4. Jerry Jeff Walker, Viva Terlingua!
3. Frank Zappa, Overnite Sensation
2. David Bowie, Ziggy Stardust
1. The Grateful Dead, American Beauty
Honorable mention to The National Lampoon’s Radio Dinner comedy album.
Your thoughts?
I don’t know if it takes me back or I never left but have been listening lately to these 5 albums:
1. Nilsson Schmilsson (listen to it once again and you wont beleive hiw many great songs are on it)
2) Ry Cooder’s – Bop Till you Drop & Borderline
3) Commander Cody Lost in the Ozone & Live from Deep in the Heart of Texas
4) Eagles – Hotel California
5) Van Morrison – Still On Top
6) And of course The Best of Asleep at The Wheel – (thank you Dean)
We saw the current incarnation of Asleep at the Wheel in Baton Rouge last year (i think). Dean told me at one of the reunions that they played at some country roadhouse near Lafayette, LA (where I live) back in the day. The stage was behind chicken wire to keep the band from being hit with flying beer bottles.
hahaha…it was actually in Cankton Louisiana and in addition to the chicken wire, they also had a cockfighting arena . the name of this fine establishment was Jay’s Cockpit Lounge. I can’t believe I remembered that 🙂
Which got top billing, AATW or the cockfight? (Spinal Tap reference.)
American Beauty (Grateful Dead) was one of the albums I literally wore out playing and had to replace and still listen to it regularly. Another I still listen to often from that era (or actually a little earlier) is Joe Cocker ‘Mad dog’s and Englishman’s’.
Mad Dogs is another worthy choice. As for AB, ‘Ripple’ and ‘Box of Rain’ have become my two favorite tracks since I’ve gotten older.
Randy — I got my daughter a “record player” for her birthday. Vinyl has evidently become cool again. I took out my copy of Nilsson Schmilsson and played it for her; she loved it, and I did too. It has been too long since I heard that great album!! Peter
Jay’s Lounge….nobody ever threw bottles toward Asleep at the Wheel. That was a much revered band and would bring wrath on the thrower. Actually the cockfighting ring was down a hallway to the back of the bar. The bar was rowdy but no chicken wire or anything. Just fun
Albums that take me back to H.S. whether I had them or liked ’em or not; some of which I bought in H.S. and still have on vinyl (in no particular order except Quah-the best): 1. Chicago I-VII 2. Elton John: Greatest HIts Vol.1 3. Santana: Abraxas & Greatest Hits 4. Edgar Winter Group: They Only Come Out at Night 5. Jorma Kaukonen: Quah (still revere this reflective ’70s masterpiece that manages to capsulize the ’60s) & Bonus lp-Isao Tomita: Snowflakes Are Dancing (first heard at My Pi pizza on Lewis over their Bose 901 speakers-pretty bizarre but, fine pizza eatin’ music, lol) I have many lps on the other lists and particularly love AB, Nilsson Schmilsson & Live & Kickin’. Jerry Jeff…”Up Against the Wall…” of course is always good for a chuckle! http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/61OSoCSjH2L._SY300_.jpg
Thanks for the reminder on Quah. Downloaded and had forgotten how great an albumin is.
From the Jefferson Airplane to Hot Tuna to Quah…as a fan of Quah I spent inordinate hours teaching myself the tracks off of it in the ’70’s. Now, that learning the guitar off Quah has become such a popular thing with the album having such a cult following he has developed this for admirers today and those from the day who still want to figure out how to play songs from it. Check it out: https://www.furpeaceranch.com/ Who can name another album that has inspired such a thing as this. I saw him live once in Misquamicut, Rhode Island in the ’80s in a large almost empty hall on the beach. What a night!
“Riders on the Storm” – Doors. Ray Manzarek’s piano solo is a classic.
“Chameleon” – Herbie Hancock
“Superstition” – Stevie Wonder
“Oye Como Va” – Santana
